Is it safe to perform yoga during menstrual period?
I am a 24 year old woman and I like doing yoga a couple of times during the week. Exercise makes me feel a lot better. One of my friends told me that I should restrict performing yoga during menstruation. What is the reason behind not doing yoga when a woman has her period?
I strongly believe that you should enjoy any exercise that you do. What is the point of doing yoga by stressing your body. You are the best person to decide what asanas you are going to practice because every woman has a different experience during her menstruation period. Performing difficult asanas would result in you becoming tired easily. It would be advisable to do yoga depending on your energy level, health and body fitness.
It would be wise to do a simple poses to relax and recover your energy during this period. They include tadasana, yoga nidra, shavasana, trikonasana, and yoga nidra.
Do not continue if you feel tired or uncomfortable at any point of time. Be careful to avoid the asanas that would put pressure on your abdomen or obstruct the normal flow. They include bhasrika, agnisaar pranayama, inverted asanas, bandhas, kapalabhati, suryanamaskar, antrik (internal) or bhaya (external) kumbhakas.
